Dr. Eugene L. Tu

Dr. Eugene Tu became Director of the Exploration Technology Directorate in 2005. Dr. Tu joined NASA in 1984. Prior to becoming the Director of the Exploration Technology Directorate, Dr. Tu was CICT Program Manager. He has served NASA as a research scientist and in several management positions. Dr. Tu received his education at U.C. Berkeley (B.S. in Mechanical Engineering) and Stanford University (M.S. and Ph.D. in Aeronautics and Astronautics) and was awarded an Outstanding Leadership Medal by NASA in 2000.

 

Dr. Carol J. Russo

As Deputy Director, Dr. Russo supports Dr. Eugene Tu in leading over 700 people performing applied research and development in a diverse range of technology areas designed to enable NASA's Exploration Vision and missions. Dr. Russo focuses on fostering close partnerships with NASA Centers, the private sector, academic institutions, and other government agencies.

Dr. Russo joined Ames in November 2000 as Special Assistant to the Director and led several strategic initiatives including developing and procuring the Agency's first University Affiliated Research Center. More recently, Dr. Russo served in a year-long assignment as Associate Director for Technology reporting to the Director of Engineering at the Johnson Space Center. From 1993 to 2000, Dr. Russo served as the Director of Aeronautics at the NASA Glenn Research Center. Before joining NASA, Dr. Russo worked at GE Aircraft Engines for 20 years in various management and engineering positions in advanced aircraft engine design and development.

Dr. Russo received a M.A. in Aerospace Engineering from Boston University and a Ph.D. in Fluid Mechanics from Harvard University. She is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

James L. Clement, P.E.

James L. Clement, Jr joined NASA at Johnson Space Center in 1983 and served on numerous missions as a Mission Control Center (MCC) flight controller. He was the lead Payload Officer and MCC flight control room operator for the STS-26, Return to Flight Mission, following the Challenger accident. His responsibilities within NASA continued to grow with his service as Chief of the Payload Operations Branch and later as the Chief of the Operations Division in the Mission Operations Directorate.

As Chief of the Operations Division, he managed an organization of approximately 350 contractor and civil service personnel. His Division was responsible for Space Shuttle and Space Station crew timeline development and execution, Space Shuttle cargo integration and execution, management of the Space Shuttle and Space Station operational procedure process, and for providing analysis and operation concepts in support of Space Station programmatic design reviews.

Mr. Clement came to NASA Ames in 2007, and after serving as Chief of the Human Systems Integration Division, he became the Associate Director of the Exploration Technology Directorate. Prior to joining NASA, he had a distinguished career in the USAF and retired with the rank of Colonel from the USAF Reserves.
